Everything in Tuzla has been tied to salt for ten million years, ever since the Pannonian Sea disappeared and left the most important evidence of its existence under Tuzla: hundreds of millions of tonnes of rock salt. People have been living in this area since the Neolithic, making Tuzla one of the oldest inhabited places in Europe. Throughout history, the city changed its name several times, but they all meant the same thing in different languages: saltpans, salt, the city of salt.

With numerous tourist attractions, Tuzla stands out from other places with a beautiful complex of Pannonian Lakes containing not just salt water but ten million years of history. Tuzla is one of the oldest continuous settlements in Europe. The oldest stilt house settlement in Europe was found in Tuzla, dating back to the Neolithic or late Stone Age, unlike other stilt house settlements found in Europe which date back to the Iron Age.

The central city park is located in the pedestrian zone in the historical heart of Tuzla. Monuments inspired by the Bosnian Middle Ages were erected in the park, and the park is dominated by the statue of the first Bosnian king Tvrtko I Kotromanić. The stone obelisk is inscribed with the text of the Charter of Kulin Ban, the oldest written evidence of Bosnian statehood.

Tuzla International Airport is only 15 kilometres from the city centre. It is the second largest and busiest airport in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the base for two major airlines, making Tuzla easy to reach from all over the world.
